In this Operational Briefing a suite of recommendations are presented for discussion and consideration for all stakeholders engaged in public space protective security. These recommendations have been drawn following the  synthesis of key findings, operational insights, and expert reflections derived from direct engagement with practitioners, evaluation activities, and stakeholder consultations throughout the PRECRISIS programme of research and innovation.

The primary purpose of PRECRISIS is to strengthen the protection of public spaces by preventing terrorist attacks and violent crimes and mitigating their impacts.

With police making increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in crime fighting – including facial recognition – a new compliance framework drawn up by the EU’s PRECRISIS project will help to ensure that the testing of AI surveillance tools in the public domain will meet all the necessary ethical, legal and security guidance and legislation, as Policing Insight’s Andrew Staniforth reports.
